Picks to Click: Week 6

Three Top 25 showdowns highlight an otherwise quiet weekend with seven ranked teams on byes.

With the calendar turning to October, a host of Pac-12 and Associated Press Top 25 teams open with a bye during Week 6 of the college football season.

In fact, seven ranked teams will be watching from home this week, including the top two teams, Alabama and Clemson. Also joining them are No. 17 Utah, No. 20 Arizona State, No. 22 Wake Forest, No. 23 Virginia and No. 25 Texas A&M.

Interestingly, there was a tie for No. 25 in the poll this week, so the Aggies share the spot with Michigan State, which goes on the road to face fourth-ranked Ohio State. The matchup in Columbus is one of two ranked vs. ranked Big 10 games, and one of three such contests overall.

The other two contests include No. 14 Iowa taking an unblemished record on the road to No. 19 Michigan. In the SEC, it’s a major showdown between undefeated programs when No. 7 Auburn clashes with No. 10 Florida in The Swamp.

Elsewhere, there are not many games that jump off the schedule for the first week of October. However, ESPN’s Chris Fallica (@chrisfallica) dug up an interesting note that we should keep an eye for Top 15 teams playing as favorites in the otherwise off-the-radar games.

Not to get ahead of ourselves, but it will be interesting to watch some of the ranked teams this week that have big games looming in Week 7. Those include:

• No. 6 Oklahoma vs. No. 11 Texas
• No. 1 Alabama at No. 25 Texas A&M (both are idle this week)
• No. 25 Michigan State at No. 8 Wisconsin
• USC at No. 9 Notre Dame
• No. 12 Penn State at No. 14 Iowa
• No. 10 Florida at No. 5 LSU

Closer to home and back to this week’s matchups, the Pac-12 is the lone Power 5 conference without an unbeaten team and it has only three teams unscathed in conference play. That will change this week when Arizona heads to Colorado as one of teams will drop to 1-1 in league play, while the other moves to 2-0 in the Pac-12 South.

While that contest is not a pick below, No. 13 Oregon is the other squad without a loss in league action, and the Ducks host California, which tumbled from the rankings after a loss to Arizona State last Friday night.

This week’s Picks to Click only have 16 games slated below thanks to three Top 25 games and seven total ranked teams on byes. The Picks to Click were 17-2 straight up last week and 11-7 against the spread, improving the season records to 99-19 overall and 54-46-2 against the spread.
